About Therapeutic Massage

Therapeutic massage is one of the best compliments to chiropractic care. Patients at BackBone Wellness often report greater relief and faster results when they receive chiropractic care and massage on the same visit. Adjustments will restore proper nerve supply to the muscles and massage will work to release improper muscle patterns set up through abnormal biomechanics of the body. Massage is often recommended along with chiropractic treatment, either before an adjustment or afterwards, as part of a longer treatment regimen. This combination of treatments often produces more effective results, and faster healing in the patient.

The Massage Therapists at BackBone Wellness Center work directly with Dr. Clinton and Dr. Schwab (and your nervous system scan which shows nerve supply to muscles and any muscle symmetry imbalance) to get you aligned, balanced and feeling better as quick as possible.

Myofascial Release Therapy

Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a visco-elastic medium (fascia) to elongate.

Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures create Myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures of approximately 2,000 pounds per square inch on pain sensitive structures that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.)

The use of Myofascial Release allows us to look at each patient as a unique individual. Our one-on-one therapy sessions are hands-on treatments during which our therapists use a multitude of Myofascial Release techniques and movement therapy. We promote independence through education in proper body mechanics and movement, self-treatment instruction, enhancement of strength, improved flexibility, and postural and movement awareness.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back tightness, and sore shoulders. The movement is slower and the pressure is deeper than traditional massage and is concentrated on areas of tension and pain.

How does deep tissue massage work?

When there is chronic muscle tension or injury, there are usually adhesions (bands of painful, rigid tissue) in muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Adhesions can block circulation and cause pain, limited movement, and inflammation.

Deep tissue massage works by physically breaking down these adhesions to relieve pain and restore normal movement. To do this, the massage therapist often uses direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles.

Will deep tissue massage hurt?

At certain points during the massage, most people find there is usually some discomfort and pain. It is important to tell the massage therapist when things hurt and if any soreness or pain you experience is outside your comfort range. People often notice improved range of motion immediately after a deep tissue massage.

There is usually some stiffness or pain after a deep tissue massage, but it should subside within a day or so. The massage therapist may recommend applying ice to the area after the massage.

What conditions is deep tissue massage used for?

Deep tissue massage usually focuses on a specific problem, such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls, sports injury)
  • Repetitive strain injury, such as carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Postural problems
  • Osteoarthritis pain
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Muscle tension or spasm

Sports Massage

Sports massage was originally developed to help athletes prepare their bodies for optimal performance, recover after a big event, or function well during training. Sports massage emphasizes prevention and healing of injuries to the muscles and tendons.

You don’t have to be in the Olympics to benefit from sports massage. Sports massage is also good for people with injuries, chronic pain or restricted range of motion. The therapists at BackBone Wellness Center concentrate on a specific problem area. Sore neck and shoulders, knees, elbows, hips-you name it, they can help restore circulation, blood flow and function allowing for quicker recovery and better performance.

Lymphatic Massage

The lymphatic system plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to heal from injury and ward off disease. It is essential to the body’s drainage system for cleansing and filtering out toxins and bacteria. Lymph fluid cleanses nearly every cell in your body, however, the lymphatic system lacks a “central pump.” In order for lymph fluid to move through-out your body and to be filtered through the lymph nodes, it depends on muscle contraction through deep breathing, exercise and manual manipulation to move the fluid. Lymphatic massage utilizes a very light pressure combined with soft pumping movements in the direction of the lymph nodes. Immune system function can be significantly increased, improving metabolism and helping the body to eliminate waste and toxins.
